Okay, so let’s get this started!!!
This book has put so many things into perspective for me and I’ve only gotten through the first four chapters. Napoleon Hill has made me feel as though my reasons for not accomplishing things are now all just excuses. In the first chapter alone he dropped the names of six different successful people, such as Henry Ford, Bill Gates and Steven Spielberg. He gave an example for each one to prove to us that once you have a desire for something nothing can truly deter you. Two of the stories that he told stood out to me the most; the first was of Edwin C. Barnes, who was a normal guy who wanted to work “with” Thomas Edison not “for” him. He did it although he had obstacles in his way such as the fact that he didn’t know him personally nor did he have the funds to pay his way to go and meet him. Somehow he managed to meet with Edison and land a job working for him, about six months later he got the opportunity he was waiting for. Ultimately, he made millions and he became a partner of Thomas Edison rather than an employee.
The second story was of R. U. Darby, who for some time was the top life insurance salesman in the country, but before that Darby’s uncle had recruited him into mining after he had found a gold ore during the gold rush. To reach the ore they needed a drill and, after borrowing money from family and friends, they bought the drill and started drilling. They were able to pay off some of their loans before they lost the vein (this is pretty much a line of gold in the ground). After sometime of continuous digging they gave up and sold their drill for a couple hundred dollars to help finish paying off their loans. Now, the man they sold the drill to was smart. He hired a professional to come out and have a look at their site, the professional told him to keep digging. The vein of gold was “three feet” below where Darby and his uncle had given up and the man made millions. I know many of us have had experiences such as this in our lives.
Unfortunately for us, many of those experiences we may never know how close we actually came to achieving something great. This experience is what made Darby the best in a business where you are constantly being turned down. It pushes you to never give up even after being told no over and over again. In each story we can clearly see how the power of thought helped these two men to continue on to greatness it caused them to never give up and to never take no for an answer no matter how long it took to get a yes they believed in themselves and knew they were destined to achieve their desire.
Now in this chapter we are given our step by step instructions to turn a desire for riches into reality. This to me was a major thing because not many books give you a guide step by step like this. I agreed with these steps a 100% but, I also feel as though these steps can be adapted to any and every desire we may have. The story in this chapter was about his son who was born with pretty much no ears and deaf. Hill raised his son with the desire to hear and somehow after years of struggle at the age of twenty-four he was able to. Growing up he was not allowed to learn sign language, go to special schools or do the things normal disabled people would do. He attended normal school instead. It was actually during his last week of college that his desire became a reality. Here’s a quote from Napoleon Hill in this chapter that I really liked, which was “our only limitations are those we set up in our own minds”.
This was our longest chapter so far. If I said I didn’t really get anything new from this chapter it would be a lie. This chapter’s story was about Charles M. Schwab, who was the assistant to Andrew Carnegie who made a $600,000,000 industry with J. P. Morgan because he had a desire and didn’t give up because of circumstances. We were given the five steps for Hill’s self confidence formula which I think can work but it’s something you would have to stick to and really want to believe or else it won’t work. I have personally done this for many reasons one being my confidence in myself to make my businesses successful and to help not just myself but all those around me and it has worked. If you follow these steps you will see results. You may tweak them to fit you personally with some of the other auto-suggestion training out there but auto-suggestion does work. Auto-suggestion is a technique that reprograms a person's mind for success, it uses your subconscious mind to remove bad habits and to help create new productive habits that will lead you to become the person you truly desire to be. For those of you who do have confidence issues this poem located on page fifty-five of the book should shine a light on why this is an issue that needs to be resolved ASAP.
“If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you like to win, but you think you can’t,
It is almost certain you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,
For out in the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow’s will -
It’s all in the state of MIND.
If you think you’re outclassed, you are,
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life’s battles, don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man
But soon or later the man who wins
Is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!”
Okay, so chapter four didn’t really present us with any new stories or examples. It did, on the other hand, delve deeper into the instructions we were given in chapter two for turning our desires into reality. This was amazing to me because now not only do we have the steps to transmute our desires into reality, we have an in depth how-to. It also touched on, which I found to be most interesting, how auto-suggestion plays a major role in influencing our subconscious mind. If you may remember we were introduced to auto-suggestion in chapter three. What I got from this chapter was that pretty much all the things we say and think, whether they be positive or negative, can affect our subconscious mind which is the thing that brings our desires to fruition. So if you are filling it with negativity may it be intentional or unintentional that is what you are going to produce. Although this was a short chapter the information given in it should be payed close attention to for this can be the factor that makes or breaks a person’s success.
These first four chapters have played into each other so well, they are not just inspirational they are also educational. Hill speaks about the same principals located in many books out today but, I can say that he explores it deeper than most. We are provided with details, stories and explanations such as who, what, where, when and why so you not only get his message you are able to deduce your own meanings all of which can only be positive. If you have not yet purchased this book to read along with me, you should do so. I promise you, you won’t regret it. That’s it for now, see you next week for my next entry.
